TAXPAYER
BREAKING NEWS, September 2006, September 29, 2006. Ehrlich uses fundraiser to fight new foe: Franchot, reports Thomas Dennison in the Gazette. "So far, McCarthy has received scant benefits from Ehrlichs endorsement. It is money and organization that her campaign sorely needs and those have not been offered so far, she and other campaign officials said. Republicans and Democrats alike agree that McCarthy who describes herself as quite conservative' and sees the comptrollers office as a tax-collecting agency, 'not a social policy or social service office' could offer voters an interesting contrast to Franchot, whose primary victory has been attributed to the strong support he received from Democratic liberals." September
27, 2006. Arundel senator switches
parties; Giannetti, defeated in the Democratic primary, might run for
GOP in November, report Phillip McGowan and Andrew A. Green in the Baltimore
Sun. "I declined the nomination in favor of John," Stafford
said earlier yesterday, noting Giannetti's credentials as an opponent
of abortion and gay marriage. "I think he has a better chance of
winning as the incumbent and being able to appeal to the same kind of
decent Democratic voters that I can appeal to." September 26, 2006. MTA names Del. Herb McMillan Outstanding Taxpayer Advocate. "MTA, the statewide voice of the taxpayers of Maryland, recognizes delegate Herb McMillan as an Outstanding Taxpayer Advocate 2003-2006, a distinction earned in four consecutive General Assembly sessions by his firm opposition to tax increases, his leadership of the House of Delegates Taxpayer Protection Caucus, and his strong advocacy for a Maryland Taxpayer Bill of Rights or TABOR." September
14, 2006. Maryland high court restores
Ehrlich's PSC, reports Kristen Wyatt of the Associated Press in the Examiner.
"Maryland's highest court ruled Thursday that the legislature
did not have the right to fire the Public Service Commission, a decision
that restores to their jobs the appointees of Gov. Robert Ehrlich. The
legislature, controlled by Democrats, fired the utility-regulating PSC
in June over a veto by Ehrlich, a Republican. The firings were a result
of dissatisfaction over electricity rate hikes approved by Ehrlich's PSC." September 6, 2003. Millions of taxpayers urge Majority Leader Frist: Bring S. 2590 to the Floor for a Vote! "On behalf of the millions of taxpaying citizens represented by the groups signed below, we strongly urge you to bring S. 2590, the Federal Funding Accountability and Transparency Act, to the Senate floor for a vote. The bill, sponsored by Senators Tom Coburn (R-OK) and Barack Obama (D-IL), would direct the Office of Management and Budget to create a publicly-available website that would list every entity receiving federal financial assistance, such as grants or contracts, and the totals awarded for each fiscal year. Such a website would entail very little cost and would greatly increase transparency in the distribution of government funding. At last, those who most deserve to know about this process - the American people - would have a tool to examine and evaluate the federal government's funding decisions and priorities."August 25, 2006. On slots, backers playing both ends; Breeders, racetracks look to OMalley and Ehrlich to save their bacon, reports Thomas Dennison in the Gazette. 'With so many issues facing the state of Maryland, I would hate to see this election start to break down on the future of gambling,' said Busch (D-Dist. 30) of Annapolis. 'We have a $2.3 billion surplus. There is no need for the revenue from slots, so the only reason this is being discussed is to benefit a handful of wealthy special interests who make campaign contributions.' |
